This past Autumn, 2025, Dark Mountain Project published Uncivilized Art, Issue 28, a book about, well, art that unearths the wild. In it is a two part essay that I wrote about my arts practice, lichens as emergent properties (what’s a lichen, you ask? I’ve got you covered), and consciousness as emergent properties (emergent properties are explained in the essay).
The first part of the essay goes into the scientific concepts and presents a field artist practice (there is certainly not just one), and the second part is an exploration of that practice where you come with me and experience the imagination being played like a sensory organ.
If you’re interested in going for a walk in the Southern Appalachians with me, and learning a bit about emergent properties, lichens and consciousness, here’s the link to the .pdf, or read the images below. Hope you enjoy!
