Radical Mycology cover After over two years of hard work, Peter McCoy has published Radical Mycology, an amazing text on how to see and work with fungi.

And I wrote the Fifth chapter – Radical Lichenology.

It was a personally transformative chapter for me to write because it is the first time that my myriad of interests in social justice, conservation, ecological philosophy, and community science pulled together with my work in lichenology.

I got to return to what originally yoked me to  lichens – these symbiotic creatures that have so many stories to share w5 - Radical Lichenology2-firstpageith us about how to live amongst each other as diverse individuals, in challenging environments, and how to intertwine these variables into patterned strengths that might never even be considered otherwise, much less put into action.

My chapter covers, of course, the biology of lichens, but also goes into depth methods of working with lichens, from lichens as environmental bioindicators, to culturing, to lichenometry, to lichen food and medicine, to lichen identification and detailed guides for spot tests and microscopy, to study design, and home herbarium curation. There’s also another section going over 15 must-know lichens. Lichen Profiles-first page
